OpenOffice.org 是一套跨平台的辦公室軟件套件，能在 Windows、Linux、MacOS X (X11)、和 Solaris 等操作系統上執行。 它與各個主要的辦公室軟件套件兼容。

OpenOffice 是免費的辦公室套件軟體，主要包含文書處理 (Writer)、試算表 (Calc)、簡報 (Impress)、及繪圖 (Draw) 等幾項功能。 這款軟體不但能夠讀寫 Microsoft Office 的檔案格式，而且還可以將文件轉換成 PDF 檔，以及將圖像檔案轉換成 swf (Flash) 檔。

什麼是Writer? Writer是 OpenOffice.org 文書處理的軟體。 除了一般文書處理軟體常有的功能外(拼字檢查、 詞庫、斷字、 自動校正,尋找和取代、自動產生目錄和索引的內容、 郵件合併等),Writer還提供了這些重要的功能:

OpenOffice.org Writer （又稱 OpenOffice Writer， OpenOffice 文書處理器 或 OO.o 文書處理器）是由 OpenOffice.org 所開發的免費文字編輯 軟體。 這一個軟體提供 Microsoft Word 軟體包括的基本功能，可以把檔案以 DOC 或 PDF 的形式儲存和輸出。
